Instructor: Sharron McElroy
Successful
grantsmanship is a result of sound scientific principles with an acceptable
budget, and this short course will provide an overview of both. The Office of
Sponsored Programs' (OSP) staff will review budgeting requirements unique to
the world of sponsored projects and will offer tips on how to create a
successful budget. Participants will be introduced to an automated budget
template. This course is ideal for new faculty/staff or anyone looking for a
refresher.
10:40-12:00 Grants.gov Room 102
Instructor:
Sharron McElroy
Grants.gov is a web-based
system designed to allow participants to locate and apply for federal grants.
Currently grants.gov is the single resource for over 1000 grant opportunities
from all of the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. Within the next year, the
National Institutes of Health is expected to implement a policy of mandatory
electronic submission of grant applications through Grants.gov. OSP staff will
cover how to prepare and submit proposals online, how to access active grant
application packages, how to complete a grant application package, and how to
check the status of an application. A demonstration of the Grants.gov system
will be conducted. This workshop is ideal for faculty and staff who submit
grant proposals to federal agencies.

Managing
Federal Contracts, Instructor Tom Cruise and Katie
Reaves
In recent years, the Office of Sponsored Programs
has seen a growth of Federal contracts awarded to Virginia Tech. This short course will walk through some
of the FAR clauses that require additional diligence on the Principal
Investigator, departmental staff supporting faculty, and the Office of
Sponsored Programs. This workshop
is designed for faculty who manage Federal contracts and for staff who support
faculty in the administration of said contracts.
All
classes are open to both faculty members and staff. Supervisors and researchers, please
encourage the staff in your areas to attend these sessions. The policies and procedures related to
research are lengthy and complicated but these classes will lead to a better
overall understanding of how sponsored projects are applied for, funded and
managed.
To register go to https://www.fdi.vt.edu/public/?term_pk1=9347. Faculty members, staff, and
students can register for the sessions listed on this site. If they are interested in more than one workshop
they will have to register for each workshop individually by clicking on

They will be asked to enter their PID/password. Once enrolled, they should receive a
confirmation e-mail within a few minutes.
