Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college, Virginia Tech is the most comprehensive university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is among the top research universities in the nation. National Capital Region Operations provides a window through which the vast array of scientific and technical expertise on the Blacksburg campus is more accessible to interested parties in the Washington DC area.

Research centers and faculty in Virginia Tech's National Capital Region offer private industry, local and federal agencies and other institutions of higher education in the region opportunities to expand scientific collaborations, to apply technical and scientific knowledge to important issues in the region, and to expand business opportunities.

In the past year these research efforts have contributed more than $12 million to the region.
