Kristin Sorensen was honored with the 2016 Outstanding Staff Award during a celebration of Staff Appreciation Day in the National Capital Region last week. The award – which carries a $500 prize – was initiated in the region 11 years ago.
Sorensen, who has worked at Virginia Tech for 15 years, serves as library specialist 1, a team member of the Resource Center Library at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church. (She is the second one in her family to be honored with this award. Her brother, Mark Sorensen, currently senior systems administrator, National Capital Region Operations, received the award in 2013.)
In announcing the award, Steve McKnight, vice president of the National Capital Region, read from Sorensen’s nomination stating that “she has been busy learning and contributing this year with the opening of the new NVC MakerLab. Outside of her normal responsibilities, she took on the role of assisting in the lab and with several big events. She learned new software programs for coding and modeling and how to use our new 3D printing equipment. She attended workshops and took advantage of resources to learn and share with others. She has created her own designs and helped others with theirs. She came to work on a Sunday in August to show the NVC Makerlab space during the Board of Visitors meeting. On a Saturday in September she worked patiently throughout the day with Science Festival visitors. Her contributions to the lab are numerous and greatly appreciated by visitors, Kenneth Wong – our lab leader—and me.”
A Virginia Tech alum, Sorensen earned her bachelor of science degree in forestry, natural resources recreation, in 1999 and master’s degree in natural resources in 2011.
McKnight also recognized three other nominees for the Outstanding Staff Award: Idiris Hagi, junior systems administrator, Alexandria; Kathrine Kirstein, business manager, Advanced Research Institute; and Anna Smith, Executive Briefing Center event coordinator, Virginia Tech Research Center – Arlington.
This year’s Staff Appreciation Day celebration was held at Virginia Tech’s campus in Old Town Alexandria. A barbecue lunch was served by faculty and door prizes added to the festivities.
